Have you ever wondered how to pose for photos with your hands?

Hand positions, whether yours or your subject’s, are a challenge for portrait photographers!

We’ll teach you how to make hand postures appear natural in this article, as well as how models use their hands to bring attention to their faces or enhance their bodies.

You’ll also learn some helpful hints for instructing those who are unsure what to do with their hands when standing.

1. Relax

One of the most important criteria to remember when doing hand poses is to relax the entire hand, from the wrist to the fingertips.

It will appear awkward if your muscles are performing something they aren’t used to.

2. Don’t hold hands tight

It’s sometimes preferable to have something in your hand to keep it occupied and prevent producing a distraction. Whatever you choose to grasp, don’t make it too tight. Clenched fingers (or any form of strain in the fingers at all) indicate that you are nervous in front of the camera, as opposed to the calm and confident appearance that you should have.

3. Touch the body – don’t grab it

Make sure you’re softly brushing the body while doing this. Apart from looking stiff, grabbing it too tightly might cause skin bumps, make it excessively red, or cause other unpleasant side effects.

4. Hand on the chin

You’re not just giving your hand something to accomplish with this hand stance; you’re also drawing attention to the model’s face.

You might try encouraging some mild motions to avoid the hand looking stiff or uncomfortable.

5. Frame your face with your hands

The hands-on cheeks are a version of the hands-on chin. This is an excellent way to frame your face and make it the portrait’s focal point.

You may also combine the two positions by placing one hand on the cheek and the other on the chin. You’re attracting attention to the face in either case.
