We’ve said just about all there is to say about the Cambridge’s rather shockingly bad Caribbean tour, not only in all our coverage of their earlier stops, but in this week’s podcast, where we went into much greater detail as to where and how they went wrong. But in the interests of complete coverage and to be fair to them, they managed to get in and out of the Bahamas with no major gaffes. Prince William delivered a mostly well received speech nodding to the problematic history between Great Britain and the Caribbean Commonwealth nations and acknowledging with respect each of their rights and plans to move forward without the monarchy. As for Kate, she did what she does best; meeting with schoolchildren and sticking to a simple, retro royal style.
This is one of those dresses that feels like it came right out of the Queen’s closet seventy years ago. As we’ve noted, sometimes that approach serves her well and sometimes it’s not the right way to go. But this looks lovely, not costumey or colonialist or touristy in tone.
For their final reception, she served up the pure Cinderella fantasy image without taking it too far. The minimalism of this gown really works well for a tour like this one and the color looks amazing on her. As we noted a few times this week, for a tour like this, she’s much better off keeping things as simple as possible. Love the jewelry.
