Happy family.
The Nobel Prize Finalist (bet you weren’t expecting those to be our next words) culture writer Soraya Nadia McDonald opened our eyes back in 2017 when she partially referenced our first book in a brilliant essay on Beyoncé and the hows and whys of her publicly performed pregnancy; the importance of the imagery in order to control the message surrounding Black women and maternity, and the deep references to art, history and culture used to support her that message. We don’t think Bey and Ri needed to be pitted against each other or even compared, but we thought of that essay a lot since Rihanna announced her pregnancy because she so clearly used fashion in a big way to control the image surrounding it. Just as Beyoncé was drawn to goddess and natural imagery to frame her pregnancy, Rihanna is nailing down and re-securing her public image as one of high glamour, body positivity, and sexiness. All of her outfits since announcing have been belly-centric and skin-baring while also being high-end, with a feeling of super-confidence imbuing them. As she said to People mag at this event regarding her pregnancy, “It really can get you up off that couch and make you feel like a bad bitch.” In other words, she’s being the Rihanna she always was.
And if you doubt us, just note how their outfits match perfectly: his kicks to her top, her earrings to his jacket. Always and forever on brand.
