We couldn’t have loved this more. We think we would have loved it regardless of the inspiration for it, but we were just so pleased with ourselves because we got it immediately when we saw her hair. This is an homage to iconic Chinese-American film star Anna May Wong.

It’s such a quietly powerful tribute for British Chinese and Nepalese-American designer to make at an event celebrating the lexicon of American fashion. While it’s not a literal recreation of any of Wong’s cinematic costumes, she was largely the face of the stereotypical “dragon lady” (often to her dismay and frustration) and many of her costumes featured a dragon motif like the one seen here. Similarly, the hairstyle feels very modern and evokes Wong’s hairstyle in 1924’s The Thief of Baghdad. Her makeup is just stunning.
