If there’s two things we hate doing, it’s overstaying our welcome and beating a horse to death (in the figurative sense). We think we’ve done our fair share of handing out the spotlight to the more notable looks of the 2021 Emmys, but it’s time to put this red carpet off to pasture, well and truly judged. Come with us on a journey of opinions, won’t you?
Allison Janney in Azzi & Osta Couture
Just fabulous. A classic look with enough of a twist to make it really stand out. And it’s perfect for her.
Amber Ruffin
That textile looks like wallpaper and drapes like upholstery.
Amy Poehler in Bella Freud (Jacket) and Galvan London (Dress)
The jacket and dress absolutely, in now way go with each other.
Angela Bassett in Greta Constantine
We feel like she’s asking us some sort of fabulous question.
Bo Burnham in Etro
This is a different take on the velvet suit from Jason Sudeikis’ version and like his, it’s well suited to the wearer. In other news, Tom got Lorenzo to listen to “White Woman’s Instagram” because of this picture and now he’s obsessed with it.
Bowen Yang in Zegna (Suit) and Syro (Boots)
The tux is great but it’s really all about the fabulous queer astronaut boots and that Tiffany brooch.
Cynthia Erivo in Louis Vuitton
She’s a lady who loves a bathmat dress, but this one really works for us. Something about the combination of that expanse of minimalist white ending in an explosion of color, pattern and texture is really appealing.
Ellen Pompeo in Elie Saab
Captain Picard’s ready room is right this way, Ambassador.
Emmerald Fennell in Valentino
She has this amazing knack for wearing the most sickeningly (not in a good way) twee looks imaginable and not come off like she’s in fairy princess drag. We don’t even like this dress but we think she looks cute in it.
Ewan McGregor in Neil Barnett
It’s a no for us on the clown shoes, Ewan.
Issa Rae in Aliétte
We’re amazed at how chic she makes this look. It’s not fair, but some folks can make a bathing suit look effortless fabulous on a red carpet.
Juliane Nicholson in Giambattista Valli
Another wallpaper dress, we’re afraid. In other news, she had the best hoagie mouth Philly accent in Mare of Easttown.
Juno Temple in Atelier Versace
This is a really interesting design that really plays to her strengths. We’re not a hundred percent on the color and we think the trim is too heavy, but we like the top and the shape of the skirt together.
Jurnee Smollett in Dior Couture
We usually hate fringe and tiered ruffles, but this is so gorgeously romantic.
Kerry Washington in Etro
It’s fine. We like how the 1930s style is paired with a corset for a more interesting take. We think the color is a bit underwhelming, though.
Mindy Kaling in Carolina Herrera
The silhouette looks great on her but we cannot with that bow.
Renée Elise Goldsberry in Cong Tri
The are way too many things going on with the design of the dress and it doesn’t look particularly fun to wear.
Sarah Paulson in Carolina Herrera
It’s big and witchy, as per her style preferences, but that neckline is out of proportion with the design.
Uzo Aduba in Cristina Ottaviano
It’s hard to go wrong with a classic Marilyn gown.
More to come in part two!
