The Oscar buzz has already started swirling around her performance in the upcoming Passing, so should we take Ruth Negga’s big fashion moment at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures gala as the opening salvo in her Oscar campaign? We suppose time will tell, but this sure looks like the kickoff to some serious fashion-based promotional work:
Since Shrimpton Couture is a vintage house, our first impulse that this looked like something from roughly 30 years ago feels like it might be on point. She’s really good at working vintage styles and we think that just might include styles from the eighties and early nineties. The green velvet and puffy sleeves look amazing on her. We’re just not sure about the skirt fabric, which looks a bit wallpapery to us and marries weirdly to the bodice. But she can work the offbeat pretty well and design quibbles aside, we think this one really plays to her strengths.
