Dua Lipa wasn’t going to restrict herself to just one Balmain dress on Oscars night. Because a diva knows that when Elton John invites you to his Oscar party and asks you to duet on one of his classic songs, you come ready to serve looks.
This is what we like to call ridicufabulous. It’s impractical, it’s maybe even a little silly, but it’s dramatic and it’s unforgettable – from the mid-thigh down. Above that, it’s so standard that it needs some big honking diamond action to make an impact. Overall, we think it’s a pretty well-balanced look, with the focus-pulling jewelry on one end, and the gigantic skirt at the other.
This is a bit more conventional in that Bob Mackie-esque mode that works so well for her. There are other worthy contenders, but outside of a couple drag queens we could name, she’s probably the person most well-suited to a Cher homage, which she deploys regularly. It’s a perfectly fine design for Oscar night, but unlike the Mackie gowns it takes inspiration from, it looks very heavy.
