Believe us when we say that picking our favorites from this year’s Met Gala was possibly the most difficult any Red Carpet Showdown ever was for us. While there were quite a few looks that brilliantly provided commentary on the Gilded Age from various under-represented perspectives, as well as a ton of superb high fashion looks that stunned and surprised, in the end, we both wound up settling on looks that simply made us happy because they were spectacular and beautiful.
Lorenzo’s Pick: Blake Lively in Atelier Versace
Lo’s Defense: I’m still shocked that I’m sitting her claiming that Blake Lively wore the best look to the Met Gala. But for me, there was no denying how well she and the House of Versace interpreted the theme of the evening without being literal about it. The dress’s references to Grand Central Station, the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building served as a salute to the history of New York and the rapid expansion of its landmarks that began during the Gilded Age. The reveal was amazing and I just love that bronze and verdigris color story.
Tom’s Pick: Nicola Coughlan in Richard Quinn
Tom’s Defense: I have a really simple reason for picking this look. I kept returning to look at it because I just couldn’t get over how pretty it is. The style of the dress is perhaps a little too close to Gilded Age period costume than I would have preferred, but I think it goes far enough in modernizing it that you couldn’t just put it on some actress in a period drama and consider it accurate. It does a really good job of playing with 19th century fashion motifs and coming right up to the line of being literal without stepping over it. But I love it because it’s exuberant, it’s fun, and with that absolutely world-class makeup job (she’s a Drag Race fan and a gal who loves herself a killer mug beat), she may just have been the most beautiful woman of the night. It’s pure fashion fantasy, which is what the Met Gala should be about.
And there you have it, kittens! We made the nominations, now you get to make the final call. Vote!
