As we said in our Cosmopolitan piece on the Grammys red carpet, everyone stand back. There’s a lady present. One might expect Lady Gaga to return to her pop star roots for the Grammys red carpet, given how she just put her latest movie awards season (and months of dressing like a prestige actress) to bed, but that’s not how Steffi rolls. The House of Gucci star kept the looks classic for a very good reason: because she’s not in actress mode or even in pop star mode here. Thanks to her collaboration with Tony Bennett, she was in classic chanteuse mode.
In Armani Privé
It’s perhaps not particularly revelatory to note that Gaga has a playful, theatrical approach to red carpet style. It’s extremely rare for her not to give a knowing wink in some way, whether she’s in a meat dress or trying to define camp on the Met Gala red carpet. We’ve always said she has the soul of an art student under all the trappings of fame; someone who likes to play with personae using visual and tactile tools. What’s notable about both of these looks is how there’s almost none of that here; no winks or twists or interpretations. Each of these looks could have been worn exactly as they’re styled here on any of a hundred torch singers from Tony Bennett’s heyday.

As we noted when she appeared with Liza at the Oscars, Gaga has an appreciation for her entertainment forebears that cannot be questioned. It’s genuine and it’s deep and you can see it here, when it feels like she’s as much paying tribute to Tony as she is to the dozens and dozens of women who sang duets with him over the decades.
