Two things of interest about the Grammys red carpet this year: First, the styles were less outrageous than we would have predicted and second, we’re surprised by how little that bothered us. You can read our thoughts on the outfits of Lil Nas X, BTS, and Justin Bieber, but the rest of you Grammys Gents need to line up for judgment.

Ben Platt in Canali

It’s just okay. We like the jacket, but the ruffled shirt feels a little gimmicky.

Billy Porter in Valentino

It seems a bit overly cynical to call this look “expected,” but once the risk-taking becomes your brand, each risk pays slightly smaller dividends. He looks great, though. It’s a gorgeous ensemble and we love the lip color.

Diplo in Tiger of Sweden

We were taken with this look. It’s sharp, well-fitted, and it sets off his hair. The vest looks a little tricky and he doesn’t look like he’s allowed so much as a deep breath, but the look delivers.

Giveon in Chanel

If anyone had told us that someone was going to wear a Chanel tweed leisure suit to the Grammys, we’d have predicted a fashion disaster, but this is actually pretty great.

Jack Harlow in Givenchy

We were also taken with this look, to our surprise. We’re not usually big on all-black suiting on the red carpet, but the fit is fine, the shoes are perfect, and from a style perspective, you can’t beat the combination of fine tailoring and loosely styled hair.

Jared Leto in Gucci

Credit where it’s due: We’ve been ranting about his humorless approach to flamboyant fashion all month, but he does much better when he sticks to a classic rockstar style. He looks no less douchey, but it suits him.

Jon Batiste in Dolce & Gabbana

We suspect very few people other than him could pull this off. It’s a lot.

Lenny Kravitz in Natalia Fedner

Blasphemy time: This look is starting to approach its expiration date, Lenny.

Leon Bridges in The Pack by Campillo

We LOVED this whole look. It feels like a salute to seventies soul groups.

Leslie Odom Jr. in Dior Homme

Hmm. First, we love the shoes. Well done there. Second, we’ve spent some time taking in the jacket design and while we don’t want to denounce any attempt to make the men’s suit more interesting and modern, we’re not sure this thing works. We might be better convinced if he’d worn a matching pair of pants and it felt more like a unified ensemble.

Trevor Noah in Gucci

We don’t think many men could pull of that sort of pale pink in a double-breasted tuxedo, but he looks fantastic in it.
