The Lost Daughter director Maggie Gyllenhaal won the “Best First Film” gong at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards and she showed up to do it in an ensemble we don’t think we’d ever have predicted for her.

We’re a bit confused by it, honestly. It’s got that indie film queen vibe to it that makes it perfect for a small, New York-based awards show, but she’s been doing her quirky retro elegance thing for so long that our brains kind of short-circuited seeing her in something like this. We want to like it, but it feels a bit like an example to support our former (and continually discredited) argument that there were no good ways left to reinterpret the ladytux. We think we might have been okay with all of it — including the oddly placed green crystal embellishment – if the jacket simply had long sleeves, as God intended. Seriously, what’s the point of a short-sleeved jacket over a long shirt? Are we just not getting it? Let’s throw this one out to the masses for final consideration. That would be you reading this, by the way. You’re the masses, so let’s hear it.
