Katy Perry was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this weekend and for her performances, she wore the usual level of Cartoon Katy stagewear styles. But we thought this subtle (for her and for him) tribute to recently deceased designer Manfred Thierry Mugler was pretty fabulous.

We think we might have expected her to wear one of the legendary vintage Mugler designs (which we suspect will be seeing quite the revival when red carpets return again), but it’s a nice reminder that the Mugler aesthetic wasn’t frozen in time and that current creative director of Mugler Casey Cadwallader is carrying on the work.

It’s a pretty sedate design; almost funereal by Katy’s standards – although that’s probably the point here. We can’t say we love the piece, but we do appreciate the reference. Mugler moved on from his own brand nearly two decades ago, so this feels less like a tribute to his work than a tribute to his influence. Or maybe it’s all a coincidence and the girl just liked the idea of Morticia in a jumpsuit. Who’s to say?
