Hailee Steinfeld, the Chopra-Jonases, Gabrielle Union and Paul Mescal all managed to snag our undivided attention with their Fashion Awards choices, but that doesn’t mean the following folks did poorly. Let’s assess, shall we?
Alexa Chung in Caroline Hu
We could get behind this whole look – including the wrinkled, vintage store vibe – if it didn’t have that exploding shower puff at the waist.
Billy Porter in Richard Quinn
He staged a melodramatic entrance with a bunch of backup dancers and it just tends to confirm our recently stated opinions that he should consider toning things down just a skosh. Men or non-binary people on red carpets in skirts and dresses is so commonplace now that his need to announce himself is starting to feel a little self-serving and over-serious. Having said that, it’s a fabulous look.
Charli XCX in Tommy Hilfiger
We suppose if you’re going to go with Tommy Hilfiger for the Fashion Awards, this is about the best you can expect. Yes, that was bitchy. It’s fine.
Demi Moore in Fendi Couture
The trend this week seems to be “Everyone wear opera-length leather gloves! Even if they don’t go with the dress!” Having said that, we kinda love this look, but we wish the train had been edited out and more interesting shoes had been chosen.
Dua Lipa in Maximilian Davis
It’s an interesting shape and we like the faux sleeves and choker, which ensure that it’s not too dull a design, but we wish there was some color or shine to pop a little.
Gillian Anderson in Chloé
Sexy caftan is entirely within her wheelhouse and we do like this one, even if the color doesn’t make it particularly photogenic. Love the pendant, but it’s too big for the neckline.
Indya Moore in Tommy Hilfiger
We don’t love it entirely, but Tommy sure did them better (in the sense that he offered up a more interesting design) than he did poor Charli up there. We think the dress would work better without the … whatever you call that sleeve thing.
James McAvoy in Giorgio Armani
Can’t really argue with that, but we’ll try: The jacket’s too short and the pants are a little snug and a tiny bit too long.
Jenna Coleman in Dior
A classic goddess gown will never go out of style, but we wish she’d been a bit more aggressive about the styling. That’s not goddess hair.
Kate Beckinsale in Sabina Bilenko Couture
We kind of love her fierce drag tackiness, which means we’re willing to accept the overdesigned bodice and perhaps slightly too matchy shoes because she’s delivering such a cheek-sucking serve. We draw the line at what looks to be a hairbow, though. Girl, that’s not fierce. That’s not drag.
Kehlani in H&M
LOVE this, full stop. H & M’s really killing it on the polka dot scene this week.
Kristin Scott Thomas in AMI Paris
She can work this sort of severe minimalism in her sleep. We think the satin finish works in the design’s favor (otherwise it would be a bit too Mother Superior), but those sleeves are too wrinkly and puckery. Love the bag and earrings.
Tan France in Mohsin Naveed Ranjha
The hair is flawless, the suit is spectacular, the white boots aren’t doing it for us.
