Generally speaking, we’ve always been big cheerleaders for Kristen Stewart’s knack/preference of wearing conventional high fashion pieces with queer/punk styling to undercut the sweetness, so to speak. She’s always been fairly great at taking looks that might have been forgettable on other wearers and giving them an edge or a twist, simply by wearing them and being herself. It’s what Karl Lagerfeld saw in her when he made her the Chanel muse and while we have some issues with that lengthy collaboration now, it’s easy to see that he was right to cultivate that style in her and use it to energize the brand. Having said all that, like everyone else, K Stew has her limits.

It’s a quietly gorgeous gown but she’s not doing anything with it. We realize she’s not much of a dripping-in-diamonds kind of girl, but this gown really calls for some sort of jewelry accompaniment – especially if you’re going to sport semi-conventional makeup and very conventional heels. We’d have accepted butcher, more punk forms of jewelry – armbands or nose rings, multi-finger rings or ear cuffs – anything to zhuzh up this look and have her come across formally styled in accordance with it. We do like that semi-conventional makeup for its punk underpinnings, but the hair’s not working, we think. Again, we get the idea to keep things appropriately edgy and we wouldn’t suggest she show up with some sort of lacquered do, but she doesn’t have the length to make that messy high ponytail work. It would have been better worn down and messy, we think.
