Just a couple of critically acclaimed directors in gowns, hanging out. One Night in Miami director Regina King ran into The Lost Daughter director Maggie Gyllenhaal at the Hamilton Awards and we like to think they had a good long talk about navigating the prestige film track as an actress-turned-director. We kinda wish Greta Gerwig and Rebecca Hall had shown up. That’s a roundtable we’d love to sit in on.

Anyway, it’s time to be shallow and judge their outfits.

We credit her with knowing exactly what shapes and styles suit her. She’s always pretty good about sticking to a ’30s, ’40s or certain ’70s-inspired style. We support her instincts on this one. Unfortunately, she tends to also gravitate toward awkward or unworkable details. The basic style of the dress is great. We don’t like (in no particular order: the textile, the trim, the hem, the sleeve length, the shoes and the color story. It’s a no for us, Maggie.

This is spectacular, though. Like Maggie, she knows what works best for her. She rarely flubs it on the details, though. This is a relatively low-key look but it suits her perfectly. She looks great. It photographs like a mass of black, though. It could’ve used something to break it all up. Love the bag, but it doesn’t really go. Love the shoes, full stop.
