Claire Foy received the Actress of the Year award at Harper’s Bazaar’s Women of the Year awards, which seems to be less about rewarding her for one role as it is to recognize her overall excellence as an actress. No arguments from us, of course. She’s got some rather showy stuff in release or in the pipeline. She co-starred in a thriller with James McAvoy, My Son, which dropped on Peacock last month but didn’t get great reviews. She’s starring in the upcoming A Very British Scandal, the followup series to A Very English Scandal in which she’ll play the scandalous Duchess of Argyll. She’s also got what looks like blatant awards bait material out in theaters with The Electrical Life of Louis Wain. We don’t know, though. We’re glad to see she’s working but, A Very British Scandal (which really does look great) aside, the rest of this material doesn’t feel up to her talents somehow. What she needs is a good, solid publicity tour and an award like this is exactly the ticket. This dress, however…
… is very much not.
The color story is unphotogenic and unflattering to her. The ship is tricky and the traps are placed too wide for her. It’s not a horrible dress by any means, but we don’t see how it checks off any boxes for her. She needs rich colors and pieces with a little more sharpness to them.
