Because ATTENTION MUST BE PAID, DAMMIT.
What an absolutely gorgeous garment. Every time we’ve featured non-western clothing collections in our International Fashion Spotlight series, people inevitably ask two questions: “Why can’t we see these gorgeous looks on the red carpet?” and “Can white people wear this?” We think Kumail is managing to answer both questions neatly. You don’t see these gorgeous looks on the red carpet as often as you like because Hollywood isn’t great about giving South Asian actors leading roles in major films. As for the second question, it’s of less interest or importance that white people get to wear these styles than it is to cast more Asian and South Asian actors in leading roles in major films. In other words, worry less about whether Timothee Chalamet could wear this and more about getting the next South Asian actor up there in a spotlight this huge, just so he can have a fashion moment as fabulous and meaningful as this.
