Since we’ve got a menagerie of WTFery in the pipeline for today (aka, the MTV VMAs red carpet) and we’re about to be pummeled by a more high-falutin’ form of WTFery in just a few hours (aka, the Met Gala red carpet), we thought we’d close out our coverage of the Venice Film Festival with something fine and fussy.  Penélope Cruz attended the closing ceremony and received the Coppa Volpi for Best Actress award for her role in “Parallel Mothers” by Pedro Almodóvar. To mark the occasion, it would appear she stepped a bit outside her comfort zone.

That is one fussy frock.

We noted last week that she’s in her style zone when she works classic, simple, goddess-y looks without too much frippery or frou frou. Well, she just had to go and shut our mouths, didn’t she? We think this kinda proves our earlier point because we don’t think this suits her at all. The silver lace is very pretty, but the shape of this thing is a little terrible. Her arms look restricted and the waist sits way too low on her. We’re surprised to admit that we actually like the hem, but we think the effect is a bit ruined by a pair of focus-pulling shoes.
