Having done the “I’m paying homage to the diva I’m portraying by dressing in a way to remind you of her” mode of red carpet style, Jennifer Hudson (a long time pro at this game), has moved on to the “Just a reminder that I’m not actually the person I’m playing in the movie” look. In other words, she went from light Aretha drag for the Respect premiere to something that doesn’t even exist in the same universe (stylistically speaking) as Miss Franklin:

It’s not so much a rejection of Aretha’s style as it is a reminder of Jennifer Hudson’s. She’s gone from playing the person to promoting her work playing the person. It’s a subtle way of reminding the press and the public that her version of Aretha was the result of her work and talent.

But make no mistake here: we think it’s awful. Lady, if it’s too hot for a coat, why not just … you know, not wear a coat, instead of opting for this extremely well-ventilated one?
