During our early-morning editorial meeting (which, unlike most editorial meetings, takes place in boxers and t-shirts, with hungry cats in attendance), we remarked that this year’s Cannes red carpet bodes well for how things are likely to go for the rest of the year. “They really turned the dials to eleven,” was the phrase batted around. Celebrities, it seems, are hungry to serve lewks in public after so much time without attention being lavished upon them. It’s a time for branding and for reminding everyone just how much of a star you can be. Everyone at Cannes was eager to bring their A-game and none of the big stars treated it like anything but a welcome and long overdue opportunity to unleash their best high-fashion or high-glam looks on the world.

Which isn’t to say that Sharon Stone stepped her game up in any way; just that when you consider how glamorous this years Cannes was, she deserves a little slice of acknowledgement for never failing to serve pure Movie Star. Except for her somewhat surprising Cinderella turn last week, she’s always been a star who keeps her trademark star looks relatively simple and classic, as befits her looks.

AMFAR GALA

This is the kind of red carpet gown that could have been worn to any major celebrity event or gala at any time in the last 60 years. It’s also, not coincidentally, a classic drag queen gown (hence the earrings, which were a smart styling choice). It’s not what we’d call high fashion or chic, but there’s nothing wrong with a little timeless Hollywood Glam at a Cannes amfAR gala. Our only quibble is that we don’t think the color is the best choice for her. Pastels wash her out.

CLOSING CEREMONY

That’s about as classic as a Hollywood Glam look gets, as suitable for the 1954 Oscars ceremony as it is for the 2021 Cannes closing ceremony. It’s a shame the skirt didn’t travel all that well. This might seem nitpicky considering how drop-dead those earrings are, but it feels like it could have used some showier jewelry to bump it up. We also think she’d have been better served if all the white had been switched out for black. D&G seem determined to keep her in pale tones for some reason.
