As her casual-separates tour of Scotland wound down, Cathy Cambridge unveiled two unexpectedly dressy looks and returned to a classic style we weren’t sure she’d ever wear again. First, she put on a pink dress (something she rarely does, although she has been wearing more of the color in the last year) to meet a special fan.

Mila Sneddon was receiving treatment for leukemia when her picture was chosen as part of Kate’s “Hold Still” photography project. In a Zoom call last year, she promised the girl they would have tea in a palace some day while wearing pink dresses, like princesses do. That’s incredibly sweet. Now let’s criticize her dress.
Oh, we’re kidding. It really is odd to see her in the color and it’s stunning how much a simple belt changes the design entirely (see the look book styling below). We think the big bow sash was more interesting, but that’s very much not this princess’s style.

The return of the coat dress! We weren’t sure we’d ever see it again. It felt like she was phasing out the one-time fave after Louis was born and she started wearing longer, unbelted coats over pants more regularly. We have to say, this one’s not really setting us on fire. The shape is nice, but the color isn’t the best for her and in the hopes of not sounding like total prudes, that neckline’s just a little too open. It’s not scandalous or anything, but a coat dress is ostensibly outerwear – or at least it has the weight of it. It just looks a little odd; like she was wearing a coat with nothing on underneath.
Still, we think the point here was to serve up as classic a Duchess of Cambridge look as possible in order to send both a “return to normal” image, and also to imply a certain respect for the hosts; that she would wear one of her most classic and almost iconic styles for the occasion.
