Oh, it has been FAR too long since we’ve had enough celebrity red carpetry from one event that we could pull together a trend post. This year’s SAG Awards was a bit of a surprise on the fashion front, since no one predicted that the virtual-only event would have much fashion at all. But the stars stepped in front of their phones and camera crews dressed very much like they would have if this were a “real” SAG Awards in a “normal” world. That is to say, they treated this event like the runup to the Oscars that it is. And this year, if there was one trend to be found among the wild variations of celebrity formality out there, it’s that a whole lot of ladies wanted to be Ladies in Red. If we can’t have a red carpet, these ladies seemed to be saying, at least we can still paint the town red – figuratively speaking.
Helen Mirren in Badgley Mischka
Queen Helen was not content to wear merely one red dress for the night – which is good, because we don’t much love this one. The puffy pink sleeves detract quite a bit.
Helen Mirren in Michael Kors Collection
This, on the other hand, is flawless. Love the jewelry. The bun works much better with this dress.
Gillian Anderson in Dolce & Gabbana
She kept things simple but dramatically elegant – and she looks spectacular, even if it is D&G.
Glenn Close in Oscar de la Renta
Glenn-da, the Good Witch. She looks like she and her dog go on fabulous magical adventures together.
Jamie Chung in Oscar de la Renta
It should be noted, along with the “Stop Asian Hate” message on her bag, that she posted the following on her Instagram:”In some Asian cultures, the color red symbolizes joy, luck and happiness. In Korean culture it symbolizes creation, passion and power. I’m so proud of my history and heritage.” Sometimes a red dress is way more than just a red dress.
Jurnee Smollett in Zuhair Murad
We’re not the biggest fans of high-low skirts, but this has a rich, regal, sexy Marie Antoinette vibe to it. Love the shoes. Not so much on the hair. A little zhuzh and volume would’ve been better.
She’s been slaying these awards shows poolside shots, but this is her best yet. That dress is gorgeous on her.
She referenced her Lovecraft Country character’s name Ruby when she posted this on her Instagram. We don’t know if it was meant as a planned tribute or just a nice coincidence, but either way, it’s definitely a dramatic look. Love the textiles, but we could have done without the shoulder ruffles and we think the sleeve length is awkward, although it should be noted that Busayo is a Nigerian brand that utilizes traditional folk forms and elements.
