TWO KINGS STAND BEFORE YOU.
It should come as no surprise that we consider these two looks to be the best menswear of the 2021 Oscars, but it has to be noted once again that they are part of a wave of male style that’s changing the game for formalwear on the red carpet – and hopefully, in the real world at some point down the line. We’ve gushed considerably about each of them and you can see our thoughts if you click on the caption above the pictures, so we’re going to keep our commentary here to a minimum and let you make the call.
Tom’s pick: Lakeith Stanfield in Saint Laurent
T’s Defense: As we said the first time, it’s exquisitely chic and owes virtually nothing to the classic tuxedo. In my opinion, that makes it one of the most exciting Oscars menswear looks in decades. It owes something to a specific point in history, updates it using haute couture methods and textiles, and it feels perfectly suited to him.
Lorenzo’s pick: Colman Domingo in Atelier Versace
Lo’s Defense: I can’t say whether this was his intention, but every time I look at this I see an expression of Black queer joy. Straight men do wear pink, of course, but the sparkles and the gorgeous fit; the heavy gold jewelry; the amazingly perfect part in his hair – it all looks like such a specific expression of the very best version of himself. To me, that’s the ultimate goal of good style.
