If you’d told us a year ago that Amanda Seyfried would mount an awards-track fashion campaign on par with some of the most fashionable and stylish nominees in the last decade, we’d have scoffed. No tea no shade against her, but we kinda had her pegged as someone for whom high fashion fuss has limited appeal. We could never claim to remember any true disasters in her red carpet history, but we also can’t remember any memorable looks at all. “Workmanlike” is how we’d describe her approach to promotional fashion. And for all we know, that’s still true. But she and her stylist Elizabeth Stewart had a pretty clear game plan as to how she was going to tackle her promo work for her buzzy performance in Mank as Marion Davies. The results have been highly consistent high-fashion looks that really play to her strengths by playing with three different style motifs: high romance in the silver screen goddess/ingenue mode, a little bit of gender play by deploying menswear elements, and occasionally, a hint of goth-lite. All of these modes – leading lady romance, slightly butch, a weensy bit goth – work really well with her looks, which is why so many of these ensembles, while not groundbreaking, came off really striking on her.
Amanda Seyfried Promotes “Mank” in Givenchy and Stella McCartney
She was on the severely limited 2020 promo trail as much or more than fellow nominee Viola Davis, taking every advantage of every appearance to serve up something declarative and extremely well-suited to her, often with just a vague retro undertone to it.

Right out of the gate, she bounced between these slightly more butch styles and these highly feminine styles.

She also had a tendency to utilize a lot of black in her promotional wardrobe and when she turned to color, it was almost always in the red family.
Amanda Seyfried in Patou for “Late Night With Seth Meyers:”
She has a real knack for making fairly classic looks come off really striking.

And like a lot of women with almost juvenile large eyes, she tends to look great in a simple take on Wednesday Addams or some other form of high-fashion gothy-ness.

And sometimes, she managed to mix all three elements into the same outfit: romance, goth, butch.

Her romantic looks were as simple and sweet as a Valentine.

And her menswear-inspired looks had an almost chorus girl retro feel to them, which is highly appropriate for a Marion Davies tribute.

Gothy romance.

And for a twist, a little bit of Sharon Tate near the home stretch.
All of her styles felt very Hollywood-specific in their references and seemed to have been chosen to present in a sort of high-legendary screen goddess mode. Like we said, we’d never have predicted she’d go for a style like this, but the results have been inarguable.
