In a so-called normal year, the Costume Designers Guild Awards red carpet is a place where (sadly, only a few) stars go to wear something a little weirder or wilder than their normal fare, in a sort of salute to the idea of fashion design. Some stars actually come in ensembles made by their fave costume designers and others just take the moment to get their hands on some weird fashion. Lana Condor spent the entire To All the Boys trilogy in romantic, pretty, sweetly twee promotional style, as befitted a rom-com queen. But she was asked to host this year’s virtual awards ceremony and she opted to get a little freaky with it.

PRABAL GURUNG

Like so. In truth, not one of these elements coordinates or looks right next to any of the others, but there’s a certain part of us that almost respects just how weird this all is. Having said that, it’s impossible for us to say that we like this design or that it looks good on a human person.

CHRISTIAN SIRIANO

This is quite a bit more standard in terms of red carpet wear, although we suspect the see-through dress will not continue as a celebrity staple when things return to so-called normal. This is also not a frock we can say that we love. Lined, it would be great. But the undies sitch going on here just isn’t good.
