And now for something pretty and uncomplicated.

Maria Bakalova and her stylist Jessica Paster seem to have a rock-solid grasp on what kind of image she should be projecting right now and they’ve never not nailed it. There haven’t been a lot of Bulgarian ingenues in the history of Oscar nominations and the film for which she was nominated was a lightning rod for controversy. It feels like there has been a concerted effort to keep her firmly in princess mode throughout awards season. It’s a look that really works for her and unlike, say Elle Fanning, it doesn’t come off like Disney cosplay when she does it. They’ve kept her away from princessy pastels and they tend to keep the styling sleekly sophisticated rather than twee or juvenile. The results feel like a smart rebranding that doesn’t fall back on cliche.
As for this dress, we love the play of the colors; the bright pinks and lavenders butting up against the bolder reds and blues makes for a subtle bit of tension in a dress that could’ve come off generic. She looks fantastic.
