Viola Davis is full-bore into her Oscar campaign and to our utter delight and approval, she appears to have decided to spend this high-profile period wearing the designs of Black designers with African backgrounds that inform their aesthetic. Perhaps she sees this as a statement and a public show of support to design work that deserves much greater mainstream consideration and of course we would agree with her on that, but it’s also just about the best style turn she’s ever made because these looks absolutely SING on her.

Viola Davis in XULY.Bët on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”
XULY.Bët is the 30-year-old Paris-based fashion design house established by Malian-French designer Lamine Kouyaté, who has, as you might imagine, an incredible eye for print and color. The cut of this suit, from the broad shoulder to the slightly roomy pant looks absolutely fantastic on her. We love the flipped cuffs of the jacket, but we don’t love the white shirt cuffs peeking out. The earrings and mani coordinate beautifully.
Viola Davis in Duro Olowu at the NAACP Awards
Duro Olowu is a Nigerian-born British designer whose work is fairly well represented on the red carpet as a particular favorite of a long line of Black female celebrities. Michelle Obama may have been most responsible for introducing his work to Americans. His love of print and color is also evident, as is the exuberantly feminine shape of so many of his designs. She looks absolutely amazing in this and we hope she dresses like this for the Oscars.
